⌨️ Keyboard Shortcuts¶

The InfoRapid KnowledgeBase Builder can be operated entirely via mouse or touch. However, for a true power-user experience and a lightning-fast workflow, the app offers a variety of keyboard shortcuts – right up to building a complete mind map without touching the mouse.

Anyone who internalizes these shortcuts can build complex mind maps and diagrams much more fluidly without constantly having to open the menus. The overview can be called up at any time in the app via the Help Assistant – or simply with the ? key.

Which column applies to my device?

The Windows column also applies to Linux, Android tablets with a keyboard and Chromebooks. The Mac column also applies to the iPad with an attached keyboard. On the Mac the backspace key is labelled "delete" (Backspace); the forward Del key is only available there as Fn+Backspace. If your iPad keyboard has no Esc key, use Cmd+..

Enter on the empty canvas creates the root item. After that, Tab creates a child and Shift+Enter a sibling. In the Create new item dialog, confirm with Ctrl+Enter – or with Ctrl+Shift+Enter, which keeps the dialog open so the next sibling follows immediately. The new item is selected afterwards, so you can carry straight on.

🧭 Moving Through the Diagram with the Keyboard¶

The arrow keys work as soon as an item is selected. If nothing is selected, Home selects the root item.

In the 3D view the arrow keys always follow the tree (up to the parent, down to the first child, left and right to the siblings), because the position of the items rotates with the camera; the camera flies to the selected item each time. In the table view the arrow keys move from cell to cell as before.

Formatting as you type

At the start of a paragraph, these characters followed by a space convert the paragraph: # chapter heading, ## subchapter, - or * list, 1. numbered list, > quote, ``` code block, [] checklist. Undo right afterwards restores the typed characters.

Ctrl+Shift+0 on Windows

Windows uses Ctrl+Shift+0 to switch the input language, so the application never receives it. To get back to normal text, press the same heading shortcut again or press Backspace at the start of the paragraph.

Shortcuts the browser keeps for itself

In the web version, the browser keeps a few combinations for itself, above all Ctrl+N (new window). Use the Knowledge Base menu for the file operations there; in the apps for Windows, Mac, iPad and Android the shortcuts work as listed.

Tip: If you use the app on a smartphone or tablet, the classic touch controls and the "long-press" (tap and hold) for drag-and-drop operations are your most important tools. As soon as you attach a keyboard – a Magic Keyboard on the iPad, any USB or Bluetooth keyboard on Android tablets and Chromebooks – all shortcuts on this page apply.
